January 9, 2018: Compassion & Choices New York Campaign Director Corinne Carey kicked off the 2018 legislative campaign to enact the Medical Aid in Dying Act today. Also speaking at the news conference in the New York State Capitol this morning were the lead sponsors of the bill — Senator Diane Savino (IDC-Staten Island) and Assemblymember Amy Paulin (D-Westchester) — as well as Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) and Assemblymember Luis Sepuveda (D-Bronx). Barbara Thomas (Saratoga Springs) and Ida Schmertz (New York City) provided personal accounts that led them to support medical aid in dying.
The speakers were joined by C&C supporters from Death with Dignity–Albany and around the state. In the afternoon supporters delivered information packets to Senators and Assembly members, to seek their support and help bring them up to date.
